BIOGRAPHY
Born on January 5, 1985, in Athens, Greece, to a Hungarian father and a Mykonian mother, Alexandros-Dionysios Karavasilis is a saxophonist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist whose artistry reflects his rich and diverse cultural and philosophical heritage.
Rooted in jazz yet shaped by classical discipline and contemporary experimentation, his work embodies a refined balance between structure and freedom. For Alex, jazz represents the essence of creative expression — a living art form that transcends boundaries and language, allowing emotions and stories to unfold through sound. The improvisational nature of the genre inspires his approach to composition and performance, encouraging both spontaneity and depth in his artistic exploration.
His musical journey began at the age of nine, when he started classical piano studies at the National Conservatory.
During high school, he expanded his interests to the electric guitar, studying at the Athens College Conservatory and developing an early passion for composition and live performance through participation in several school bands.
Following his graduation, he moved to the United Kingdom,
where he pursued studies across multiple creative disciplines — Architecture at the University of Greenwich, Computer Animation and Special Effects at the University of Bradford, and Video Production and Film Studies at the University of West London. Throughout his academic years, he remained musically active, performing with various bands and working as a DJ in numerous venues.
In 2013, he returned to Athens to focus on a professional music career. He composed music for short films, theatrical productions, advertisements, and multimedia art projects, while continuing his formal studies at the Contemporary Music Research Center (CMRC) of the Athens Conservatory, specializing in Electroacoustic Composition on the Synthi 100. He also studied Film Scoring and Music Production under Costas Varotsis at the Nakas Conservatory and Classical Harmony with Evangelia Velli Kosma.
Alexander's exploration of jazz deepened in 2015, when he began studying jazz drums with Nikos Sidirokastritis at the LAB Music School and later with Anastasios Gouliaris at the Athenaeum Conservatory where, he also pursued a diploma in Jazz Improvisation and Jazz Ensemble. under the mentorship of Sylvio Syrros.
In 2017, he transitioned to the jazz saxophone, under the mentorship of Sylvio Syrros, which has since become his principal instrument. Since 2020, he has been performing professionally as a saxophonist, appearing at numerous jazz venues including Kelari, Spiti Art Bar, and Zoo. Over the past decade, he has collaborated with several respected musicians, including Stefanos Kozanis, Yorgos Danis, and Apostolos Leventopoulos.
Alexandros-Dionysios Karavasilis continues to develop a distinctive musical voice — one that merges technical mastery, emotional depth, and an enduring spirit of artistic exploration.
